State Cup Reports 2011

Recently Norths sent 4 teams and 15 referees to Port Macquarie to compete in the 2011 State Cup; Women's Opens, Men's Opens, Mixed Opens & Senior Mixed. This year saw games played in very wet and muddy conditions.  Nonetheless, there were plenty of great games to watch.  As a club we had great success across the park.

With a new look Mixed Open team, the squad competed well but fell one position short on the ladder to qualify for Sunday finals. Both our Women's and Men's teams had great campaigns and were successful in qualifying to the quarter finals only to meet some tough opposition before bowing out. As in 2010, our victorious Senior Mixed team clinched the champions trophy for the second year in a row in a tough finals series. With plenty of round games played going in to the finals they proved to be the best team standing at the end of the tournament. Congratulations to Ian Kalms and his team on their well deserved win!

Senior Mixed: State Cup 2011 Champions

    Report by Ian Kalms
    The great NFL Coach, Vince Lombardi once remarked “I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfilment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious.”

    Vince's comments are probably the best way to summarise the feelings of our performance at State Cup. After 11 games the team was overjoyed at our success in being crowned the 2011 State Cup Senior Mixed Champions (back-to-back titles 2010 and 2011), but we certainly made life difficult for ourselves and it was a hard road to get the job done in the end.

    After the eight round games we ended up finishing third in our pool. Unfortunately we lost to Wagga Wagga and Balmain and whilst this was not what we had planned it was not completely unexpected. The Wagga Wagga side was very strong and we have developed a great rivalry with Balmain over recent times and the games are always close.

    The one thing that gave us a great deal of confidence was watching a video of our game against Balmain and also the game between Wagga and Balmain on the Saturday night. We all seemed to look at each other and realised that we were way better than what we had been playing and it was time to step up. I think it dawned on us that we could still win State Cup, no matter what. Thanks to Dougie for doing the video work, you are a Champion!

    When Sunday came around we had one more round game and then a qualifying final against East's which we won fairly easily. This then sent us into a semi final against Balmain. Due to the draw, Balmain had a bye in the Sunday morning round game and because they finished in the top two, it ended up being their first game and our 3rd game of the day. After being down by two tries for most of the game, rather than playing an up tempo game Balmain slowed the game down which meant we could rest our weary legs. We were lucky enough to even the scores up 3 all with only minutes to go. In the end we prevailed in a drop off to win 4-3 with Eric scoring the winning try. It was a herculean effort by the team.

    This meant a show down with Wagga Wagga in the Grand Final. Fortunately for us, the sun was out and it was a nice hard dry track....something we had been wishing for all weekend. Plus we saved our best for last! It is pretty pleasing as coach to say that we played the best game of our State Cup in the Grand Final. We led for most of the game but Wagga were able to draw level at 5 all with only 90 seconds to go. I questioned Andy for wanting to run our kick off move again even though we had scored from it earlier in the game (surely they will cover it this time?), but Andy ran a variation of it and scored which meant we took the lead and just had to hold them out for the last 30 seconds. In the end we won the Grand Final 6 - 5. A special mention to Mark 'Ana' Seeto who was Player of the Final.

    You need a fair bit of luck to win a State Cup, whether it is no injuries, a favourable draw, and the right conditions. However you have to put yourself in the position to take advantage of that luck. To this end the team were incredibly dedicated and trained hard throughout the campaign. Our team would have been easily the fittest side in our competition so when it was needed all the fitness and hard work definitely paid off. Well done team!

    But, often at State Cup it's not always the touch footy you remember, some of our fond memories and highlights were:

    * The deer in the headlights look on Mark's face when he saw the coach's gridiron pass coming his way - Leave it to Joe Montana and Jerry Rice coach!;
    * Bec ignoring the coach's call to dump the ball and sending him on a 60m sprint to the line. And the coach getting there without breaking down;
    * Kate wearing her shorts backwards for most of day one, the whole team didn't even notice. However when she wore them the correct way we lost a game, so for the rest of State Cup she wore them backwards including the Grand Final...it became our good luck charm;
    * Andrew looking up from the line in triumph ("Yippee I'm off the nudey run") only to see 2 defenders, the referee, and at least a dozen spectators laughing at him as he lay with the ball on the 5m line against Murwillumbah;
    * Coach says "okay everyone, do your own warm ups now" - The Ange and Bec warm up - both stand with arms on hips with 1 leg out in front slightly bent, this goes on for several minutes and if lucky, they might decide to stretch the other leg;
    * When doing the 'truck and trailer' warm up drill, Phil stops and says, "lets change directions", but then keeps going the same way;
    * Dougie cooking sausages on his portable BBQ in the tent, how good were they;
    * Oliver (Kate's little boy) eats a piece of mango, crawls on top of Andy while he is lying down relaxing after a hard game and then Oliver sneezes on Andy's face.....Andy ended up wearing the mango - Gold! We have never seen Sojun laugh so hard;
    * At the end of every night Andrew 'Baby' Stergio would play his guitar and sing some of our favourite songs....what a great way to relax at the end of the day;
    * Eric's triumph in the "Battle of Balmain" at the end of the semi final - 20 cracks at the line, about 4 penalties, at least 3 valid tries, but at long last one was awarded to send us into the Grand Final;
    * But when Eric scores in the semi final drop off, the coach watches the rest of the team run on to celebrate forgetting that Balmain has to have a chance with the ball (the coach definitely wasn't Kalm then)
    * But the best of all - the jubilation on everyone's face when we beat Wagga Wagga in the Grand Final. Made all the more special as we did it the hard way.

    To finish, other teams always congratulated and praised our North's team regarding the great spirit in which we play our touch footy. This is testament to each of the individuals that make up the team and I am very proud and honoured to coach this fantastic group of players and friends. This is a great forum to thank each of them individually and collectively for their contributions and efforts both on and off the field. To my team mates in the North's Senior Mixed team and State Cup Champions for 2011 - Angie, Amy, Bec, Kate, Shar, Wendy, Andrew, Baby, Eric, Haz, Mark, Phil and Sojun - Thankyou!

    Now we can look forward to 2012 and see if North's can become the first club to win a hat-trick of State Cup Senior Mixed titles.

Women's Opens

Report to come

Men's Opens

Report by Cameron Byrne

The Norths Men's Open B Team had a strong campaign, but were unfortunately defeated in the round of 16 by the current Division 1 Vawdon Cup champions, Hornsby.

Despite defeating the same Hornsby side in the round games, the Men's side were unfortunate not to progress through to the quarter finals.
An earlier narrow defeat to Wallsend and a draw against Nelson Bay made it difficult to progress from the group in top spot, which would have ensured a more favourable draw. The team managed to finish 3rd in the group, in what was a very competitive pool.

Though this was arguably the strongest and most prepared of the Men's B sides that has competed at State Cup over the last 3 years, the results were not up to the teams high expectations, having previously reached the quarter finals in 2009 and 2010.

Positives to be taken from this year's tournament however, include the emergence of young gun, Saxon Fischer Gray, the continuous improvement of Andy Gonzalvez, Mark Preston and Mick Ingram and the strong leadership of newcomer Inshan Sheriff.

Honourable mentions also go to Glenn Castle and Julian Vertley who made the trip from Queensland to join the team and had very good tournaments despite not being able to train with the team.

Thanks also to James Salvaggio, Co-Captain, Russel Watsford, Head Coach and Tim Harris, Manager who each  provided strong support, direction and leadership to the team throughout 2011.

After finishing Vawdon Cup as undefeated minor premiers, the future of the team looks bright. 2012 promises to be an exciting year for the Norths Men's team.

Senior Mixed ChampionsNORTHS SUCCESS AT NSW STATE CUP 2010
Report by Yelena Fairfax

Tears, tries and triumphs. Yes, another year of NSW Touch Football State Cup has come and gone. With Norths fielding its largest team to date, it was always set to be a cracker of a weekend. Despite rainy conditions in the lead-up causing the event to be a very muddy affair, it looks like Norths may just be a fan of the mud - with three of our four teams making it on to finals and Senior Mixed becoming the first Norths side ever to win a State Cup title.

After winning all 8 of their round games, the Senior Mixed team were pretty confident heading into the last day of finals. And so they should have been. A 5-3 win over Port Macquarie in the semi final saw the team heading into the grand final with a clean bill of wins. One of the last games of the day, a stellar crowd turned up to watch the Senior Mixed bring home their last win - defeating Balmain 6-3 to leave the fields as undefeated champions. A gallant effort by the whole team, with Eric Kho awarded voted player of the final by the NSWTA judges.

It wasn’t only Senior Mixed that was getting multiple wins on the board. The Mens Open B team finished the round games with six wins and only one loss under their belt. Playing the quarter final against Parramatta on Field 1 meant all eyes were going to be on the boys. Pressure was on! Full time and the scores were tied at 4-4 - time for drop off. A penalty against Parramatta on the line gave the boys another set of six - to convert to a try. With everyone thinking that was the win, it was back to defending hard once they realised Parramatta were still going to get a shot despite having given away a penalty. Unfortunately Parramatta came back fighting hard, securing a try in the next set of six and then going on to score the following try - giving them the 6-5 win over Norths. Disappointing for the boys, but an incredible game to be apart of. Players player of the tournament went to James ‘Sunny’ Salvaggio.

Joining the men in making it through to quarter-finals were the Women’s Open B team. With Norths women previously being knocked out before the finals - the team were excited about making it to the final day of games. Heading into the quarters with three wins, one draw and one narrow loss - the girls knew they were going to have to play hard against the tough, smart Canterbury side. Three tries up and only ten minutes to go, it looked like the Norths girls were set for semi finals - but it’s never that easy with State Cup touch. Three quick tries and it was Canterbury and Norths head to head with minutes to go. A controversial late try to Canterbury saw the girls knocked out of the semis, with a 4-3 loss. Players player for the tournament went to Kylie Allen.

While the Mixed Open B Division team didn’t make finals, they put in a gallant effort across the weekend. The first time together for the side, most players had never played rep touch before. Despite four losses and one win, the team competed in the games - giving their competition a run for their money. Players player for the Mixed Open was Dustin Ferguson.

A successful weekend across the board for Norths, as the club continues to build and grow - there’s already excitement about what next year is going to bring...

JSC 2011Junior State Cup 2011

Report by Yelena Fairfax

After weeks of training in 40 degrees-plus weather conditions, it was with much excitement that the Northern Suburbs Touch Football club headed to the Junior State Cup in Wollongong on February 18 with three women's teams - the U18s, U16s and U14s. Arriving on the Friday night, the girls were each given their uniforms, captains were named and rules and the draw were handed out. With the U14s having four games the next day and the U16s and U18s each having three - it was a relatively early night for all (even the coaches).

The first game of the day for both the U14s and U18s saw them come up against the strong competition of Wagga Wagga. A difficult one to begin with as the country teams are always tough to beat - Wagga Wagga proved this to be true once again in 2011 by making it to the finals in the U18s. Next up for the U18s was Orange Thunder. While they didn't manage to get the win, this second game saw the girls come together and start looking like a team. Playing disciplined touch with strong drives, lots of talk and shooting defence - the girls were pumped for their next game against Bankstown Jets. An extremely close game, the Bankstown Jets narrowly defeated the U18s 4-2. Despite being three girls down due to various muscle tears and dislocations, the team never gave up and showed strong determination through-out their last game of the day. The next morning, they were up against Nelson Bay Neptunes. An exciting finish to the tournament - the girls continued with their impressive form to secure a draw against this team, 3-3. With a better for and against tally throughout the competition, the Norths U18 pulled ahead of Nelson Bay in the final results. Congratulations go to captain Eleanor Raper and vice-captain Freya Clayhills and Coaches Player of the Tournament Annie McAllister. Coaches were Yelena Fairfax and Andrew Windsor. Mentions must also go to Maddie Arnold and Chiara Anselmi who, despite playing up an age group in the U18s, made the Scorpions U16 squad for the National Touch League.

Stepping up from U14s proved quite tough for the Norths U16s team, with the majority of the team still only 14 years old. While the results were disappointing, they still managed to score a couple of tries and continued to develop their driving patterns and tap off move throughout the competition. With most having another year in this age group, the experience they received will be invaluable for next year. Coached by Sally Meagher, the team was captained by Lucy Dirou with Vice Captain Bridgette Sulicich. Coaches Player of the Tournament went to Isabella Travers.

It may have been the first year of touch for the U14s, but strong coaching from Kim Solman saw this talented group of girls grow stronger and stronger as the weekend went by. After disappointing losses in the first few games, a well deserved win in the last game emphasised how much they improved with each game and their never say die attitude. A great learning experience for the team, they've already begun organising themselves for next year's Junior State Cup. Try scorers for the U14s included Emma Huskins and Zoe Baptist, with Sophia Charlton receiving the Coaches Player of the Tournament.

The Norths teams may not have come back with a multitude of wins under their belts, but each team showed a vast improvement in skills, touch-specific development, team work and discipline over the weekend. Leaving Junior State Cup with a strong determination for next year, all we can say is watch out for the Norths girls in 2012...
