Grand Final
2011 touch football for Norths ended on Sunday 11 December with our Grand Final games. After weeks of rain and generally miserable weather, things were not looking good. However, Sunday arrived with blue skies and warm weather which was fantastic. There were 12 grand finals and 26 referees scheduled on games. As usual there some unfortunate last minute withdrawals (illness/injuries etc) but referees happily re-adjusted and even drove up madly all the way from Canberra, and all games continued with triples. The intensity could be felt in the air and the games were keenly contested. There was some sensational champagne touch football (no drop-offs) followed by yummy bacon, egg or sausage rolls and a cold drink. Does it get any better?
No sooner than we had finished up, a thunderstorm struck with lightening and heavy rain. Talk about good timing!!
Thank you to all that participated, particularly those that backed up for games, helped out on the BBQ/ in the canteen/ on the mike and made the Norths Grand Final day a successful day.
End of Season Xmas Dinner:
This year we held the dinner on a Thursday night and at our sponsors “The Great Northern”. It was a night of nights with rep players, coaches, managers, ground supervisors, referees and friends bringing our attendance to 56. It was the biggest night ever and it went off with a bang (literally – bon bon bang!). Awards were handed out (by the four State Cup rep teams) and referees, upgrades were announced, Kris (Tim Harris) handed out Kringle and the festive eating and drinking continued.
Congratulations to the following referees who received their upgrades during the season;
Level 1 – Angus Millen
Level 2 – Alice Ferguson, Luke Russell and Lillian Seeto
Level 3 – Warren Lynch and Marty Yeo (upgraded at State Cup 2011)
Level 4 – Angela Budai (upgraded at State Cup 2011)
Awards handed out on the night included:
- Most Improved Award - Marty Yeo. Marty has gone from strength to strength this year. His whistle, positioning and general reading of the game have improved tremendously this past year. And it was no surprise that he was upgraded to Level 3 at State Cup. Well done Marty!!
- Encouragement Award - Alex McOnie. Alex has been refereeing Monday nights as well as school kids. She has shown great potential, handling not only the cranky old guys but also the super-quick Open high games. Well done Alex!!
- Most Games Award– Rina Janson (91). Rina pipped Danny “Lock and Load” Gock (89).
- Len Brown’s Sheriff Award– Josh Vernon. Josh narrowly edged out Gary Watman for this award.
- Porpoise Award – Marty Yeo – For trying to flop towards the score-line and failing dismally.
- Clash of the Titans Award – Angelo Rozos and Tim Harris. For an on-field collision that shook the foundations.
- Karuah Coffee Award – David “Mr Touch” Rowlands – for the 15 toilet breaks on the way up to Port after a small coffee.
- Focussed Award – Gary “Trigger” Watman. For being oblivious to the ambulance that drove past him to pick an injured player.
- Best Ground Supervisor – Sally Meagher. For supplying cheese and bikkies on her nights!!
- MX Overheard Comment – Nat Walker – “Yayyy….only 2 months until I can legally drink and drive”
State Cup 2011
What a fantastic tournament to represent Norths at – this tournament is held annually on the first weekend in December up at Port Macquarie. This year, Norths sent 4 rep teams and so the requirement is for 5 referees. There were 15 Norths referees at this tournament, which is a great result and shows the depth and calibre.
This year saw games played in very wet and muddy conditions. The washing machines got a real workout. Nonetheless, there were plenty of great games to ref and watch.
Referees that were appointed Grand Final games were;
Danny Gock, Luke Heckendorf, Peter Jones, Phil Lowe, Barry McNamarra, Kim Perry, Josh Vernon
Upgrades were announced as per above.
Referees’ Referee Award for 2011 was awarded to our very own Kim Perry – congratulations!!
Lastly
Special thanks to you all for contributing so much during the season and making this season and Norths a success. Without you and your help, Norths would not be run so efficiently. Have a great break from touch, recover from any injuries sustained during the season (if any), enjoy family & friends time, (no touch time) have a great Christmas break and wishing you all a Happy New Year.
Director of Referees: Rina Janson
